What is a product anyway?

The Cambridge dictionary describes ‘product’ as: something that is made to be sold, usually something that is produced by an industrial process or, less commonly, something that is grown or obtained through farming

 

The old definition

In the good old days products where easy to identify, they were commercial items that you could pay money to acquire, pick-up, take home, and consume.

The product might be in the form of a farming item like an apple, a technological product like a mobile phone, or a textile product like a t-shirt, but they always had a physical form.

A book is just one more example of a ‘product’, but does a book it cease to be a product, if the user consums it via an electronic pdf instead of the printed form?

The growth of the service industry, and the digital age have highlighted the limitations of old definition of products. For years we evaded this problem by referring to ‘products and services’, but this still does not cater for dvd’s, video’s and many other digital products that are just as valuable as physical ones, and is combersome to say the least.

Not abour semantics

What it’s critically important to note is what we are observing here is much more than mere semantics.

What we are observing is a transformation in the way that users place value in elements beyond their physical form. Indeed it is vital that any ambitious individual, entrepreneur, or small-business owner is aware of this radical commercial transition, without that knowledge you will have no opportunity to create viable commercial products for todays market.

The new definition

Today ‘products’ is a wide term which includes all manner of physical, electronic, digital, and service solutions.

In-fact I will be so bold, as to go one-step further, a ‘product’ can never be described by it’s physcial atributes alone.

A product is in fact a combination of many factors that influence the overal solution, these include the item (physical, digital etc), the interaction that surrounds the aquisiion, use, and discardment, and the emotional exchange that takes place as a consequence of that product use.

A car is more than a vehicle

A good friend of mine Tony loves his car, a Beatle. He owns another car that is quicker, more comfortable, more reliable, better for the family, kinder to the environment, but the joy he gets as he drives his Beatle is far superior in a very non-tangible way. The friendly wave from other Beatle owners, the conversation it can start at social events, meeting other Beatle owners at the various events etc. is not only a significant part of the ‘product’, it is the most importnat reason for the purchase in the first place.

So when Tony purchased the ‘product’ in this case a car, what he actually purchased was an interaction between, him, the car, and others.

A shirt isn’t just something to wear

Like many other in the UK Im a football fan, whilst I can barelly kick a ball straight (as my friends at Regents Park on a Sunday morning will be only to happy to confirm), I love watching my favourite team Arsenal play whenever I get a chance, either live at the stadium, or much more often via TV.

Whilst I have purchased a handful of products from Arsenal, in the form of clothing, football tickets and so on, the value I get stretches far-beyond these physical items, or even the experiences I have acquiried.

Football is a global language. If I step of the plane in Bangkok, Rio, or Zanzibar, I can if I choose be immediately identified as an Arsenal fan simply by wearing the shirt.

An invisible, worldwide agreement states that it is within my rights to go up to any stranger in the world and start a conversation if they are wearing an Arsenal shirt, and all I have to do to achieve this, is shout the word ‘Arsenal’ in a suitibly football chant. And likewise, by wearing the shirt myself, others will attempt to engage with me, even if we do not share the same language.

That assett is both significant, and profound, and stretches far beyond the traditional sense of a ‘product’.

Yet it is these interactions, experiences, and exchanges that modern society demands, and as such we need to transform our innovation, and creation strategies to produce these interactions that our potential customers are searching for.
